Just a few years ago, AWD vehicles were a niche market, dominated by Audi in the higher end and Subaru in the economy sector. Volkswagen, Porsche, Honda, Toyota, and Mazda had all floated trial offerings, but none caught on in a big way. Domestically, the “Eagle” nameplate from AMC offered 4WD and AWD passenger cars as far back as the 1970s, but they were still a niche player.

But now the public is catching on to the advantages of AWD when it comes to handling and grip, and the automakers are happy to provide the technology. It’s common now to find an AWD version of a standard model for just a little more money.
These days, manufacturers are falling all over themselves to offer vehicles with All Wheel Drive – and this is a good thing!

Reasonably sporty

Ford’s newest offering in this market is the Fusion AWD – this is a low-priced upgrade from the standard small family sedan, and it’s a winner in my book.

I like cars with plenty of torque and horsepower. I really like cars with lively handing and an eager attitude towards a curvy mountain road. A comfortable car is nice to have, too. But what really gets me going is a car that offers a great value – a lot of car for not a lot of money. The best of all cars offer great handling, a punchy engine, nice features inside, and a surprisingly pleasant sticker price.

A great deal for $35,000

That’s why I’m just absolutely in love with the new C350 from Mercedes Benz. This car hits all the right notes, and hits them at a price that will knock you out.

I’ve had both ends of the Dodge spectrum in the last couple of weeks. The first car I drove was the Dodge Avenger SE. This is Dodge’s economy sedan, oriented towards young people – it’s priced to be your first-ever new car at $18,220. The model we tested had a $220 easy-clean seat option (handy for new parents) and a $675 “Destination Charge”.  I don’t know about you, but the first thing I’d say to the salesman is “getting it to the dealership is your part of the deal, driving it away is mine.”

A good basic car

So, let’s take a look at the Avenger. From the outside, it’s got all of Dodge’s latest styling cues – in fact, it looks like a 7/8th scale Charger.  The styling is retro-sporty, and the car is not that much smaller than its big brothers.  It’s a nice looking ride.
