Ultimate SUV: 2009 Range Rover Sport PDF Print E-mail
SUV

Range Rovers are the gold standard for luxury SUVs. They invented the segment and the name carries all kinds of great brand cachet. The folks at Land Rover may have left the Ford corporate umbrella when the company (along with Jaguar) was sold to Tata in India, but they still know what their customers want, and they deliver it well.

One thing to like about Land Rover is that they’ve stayed largely immune from the disease that causes automakers to radically redesign their cars every year or two. The press packet that came with this week’s 2009 Range Rover Sport was written in 2004 for the 2005 auto show season, and it’s still applicable to the 2009 Range Rover.  When you’ve got the car the way your customers want it, there’s no need to change things for the sake of change.

Without a doubt, the 2009 F150 Supercrew 4X4 Lariat edition ½-ton pickup truck is the nicest truck I’ve ever driven. It’s got really comfortable leather seats – and those are both heated and air-conditioned. Yes, it’s really got a machine that whispers cool air at your backside on command.

Tough-Looking, but Luxurious

It’s also got a backup camera, backup radar, GPS navigation system, 6-disc CD changer, satellite radio, auxiliary MP3 and USB jacks, hands-free cell phone support, the Microsoft SYNC voice-activated control system, built-in trailer brake controller, power moonroof, wood grain trim, and for all I know, there’s a massage table somewhere in the spacious back seat passenger area.

SUVs have taken a beating in the last year. They’re out of fashion, derided as gas hogs, and generally held responsible for the current dire straits of the automotive industry. Yet SUVs and pickup trucks made up over 60% of automotive sales in 2007.  A lot of that can be chalked up to work trucks – it seems like every gardener, carpenter, and plumber in America runs from job to job in a white pickup – but SUVs fill an important segment of the auto market.

Strong on the Road

The reasons are obvious – if you need to haul a family and their gear, if you need to pull a moderate-sized trailer, or if you live in the 75% of the United States that sees snow, heavy rain, or unpaved roads, then an SUV probably looks attractive to you at least part of the time. Certainly in the heavy winter of 2008-2009, more than one person has been grateful for their 4WD SUV.
